Lara will meet a variety of enemies and hazards in
her travels, ranging from the relatively easy-to-kill Bats to the Mother From Hell
creature which requires a vast amount of ammo to kill. The enemies will tend to get harder
to kill as you proceed through the game, resulting in some really nasty ones in the last
few levels.
This section will give you some insight into what enemies you are up against, what are
their strengths, and their weaknesses, and some hints any killing them. You may want to
skip this part, as if you know what all your enemies are about, then there will be no
surprises in the game.
Another important part about enemies is that you can hear them. This allows you to
anticipate an attack up ahead, or hear an approaching enemies from behind. Each enemy has
a distinctive sound (just like the real thing), and if you are using stereo sound, then
you will be able to hear where they are, depending on which speaker the sound comes
through.
If you hear an enemy approaching, you can quickly select the best weapon to attack with
(assuming you have it), and if possible find a place where you can shoot from without
getting yourself killed.
The enemies & hazards are shown below, along with the level in which they first
appear, although they may turn up anywhere after that
Use the links to the left to quickly find information about the enemy / hazard which is
getting on your nerves, or you just like to know about.
This section covers the living enemies which you'll
come across, and in most places, the best way to kill them. The level in brackets relates
to the first time they are encountered
Bats (Level
1 - The Caves)
These are the very first enemy you will come across, and are relatively easy to shoot,
with only one or two shots needed to kill them. Try to keep them at arms length, because
they will become tangled in Lara's hair and begin biting at her head. They are also
difficult to hide from, as they attack from above., but they cannot follow you under
water.
They will make a squeaking sound just like a bat, along with flapping of wings, so you
should be able to hear them coming. Just keep an eye above you, especially in the first
couple of levels.
Wolves
(Level 1 - The Caves)
These are the main enemy for the first few levels. On their own, they are fairly easy to
kill, with just a couple of well-placed shots. What makes them more difficult is the fact
that they tend to attack in packs, so whilst Lara is shooting one wolf, she can be
attacked by others. The best weapon against these creatures is the Shotgun, as they come in close, and one shot will normally see them off. If
you only have the Pistols, then keep moving, preferably by jumping, as they cannot attack
you mid-jump. Also keep any eye behind you, as they tend to surround you.
Bears
(Level 1 - The Caves)
These again will appear in the first level, but then only once more in the second.
Although they are quite slow creatures, they will quickly maul Lara to death if they get
close enough, so make sure you keep them at arms length. Again the Shotgun is best here as one close range shot will kill a bear. Also they only
appear in ones, so you won't have to look out for more. If you only have pistols, take
evasive manoeuvres to keep away from it.
Bears roar, and then charge you, so be on your guard. They cannot jump up ledges or down
holes, so find a place to safe place to shoot them from is possible.
Raptors
(Level 3 - Lost Valley)
These creatures only appear in this and the next level, but are quite quick, and have a
nasty bite. Keep an ear out for these creatures, because they may jump at you from
nowhere. They are easy to hear coming as they make a distinctive thumping sound as they
run, and their roar is quite high. Their main weakness is that they tend to stop and roar
at you before they pounce. This gives you an opportunity to shoot them with the Shotgun if you have it. Again, one good placed shot at relatively close range
will bring down a Raptor. As with other creatures, if you only have the Pistols, shoot and backflip at the same time to keep them away.
T-Rex
(Level 3 - Lost Valley)
You'll only ever come across one of these, but it's a beast and a half. It's impossible to
not know when it is approaching as the floor begins to shake as it runs. The T-Rex will
charge you and attack quite quickly, and those long legs make it a fast runner. You need a
rapid shot weapon for this creature, so use your Magnums or Pistols. The best way to kill it is to get into a tunnel or hole and shoot at
it from there, as because of its size, it cannot follow you into tunnels. If you can't
reach a hiding place, keep running and jumping to stay out of the way whilst your
shooting, and whatever you do, keep away from those jaws, as one bite, and Lara will get
tossed around like a rag doll with fatal consequences.
Mummies
(Level 4 - Tomb of Qualopec)
You'll come across one of these creatures in the throne room, to the left of the throne.
Shoot it as soon as you can, as it is quite easy to kill if it is just standing there. Pistols will do for this guy as it doesn't move a lot.
Larson
(Level 4 - Tomb of Qualopec)
This is the guy you met in the beginning FMV in the Cafe. He may have been nice and
friendly then, but in the game he's out for blood. The first time you meet him is at the
end of this level, and although he's only armed with a pair of pistols and doesn't take
too many shots to kill, he's quite a good shot, and persistent. Jumping and backflipping
will help avoid his shots, but he can quite easily shoot you in mid-air. He can even shoot
Lara when she's underwater, so don't try hiding their. He doesn't however like to get shot
himself, and after a few hits will run around a bit before attacking again. This is the
time to attack even more with rapid fire weapons (Magnums or Pistols).
Lions
(Level 5 - St. Francis' Folly)
These creatures are very similar to Wolves in that they tend
to attack in packs, but they are quicker and harder to kill. Don't try using the shotgun
with these, as you'll need rapid fire to kill one before another mauls you. Keep moving
around and watch out for ones behind you. Remember that they cannot jump up onto ledges,
into pits or into water, so find a safe place to shoot from if possible.
Gorillas
(Level 5 - St. Francis' Folly)
These can be brought down with one Shotgun blast from
close range. But watch out as they are quick and agile and will attack you soon as they
see you. Their weakness is that they tend to show off by stopping and beating their chest.
This is the time to blast them. They sometimes appear in groups, so take them out quickly
because if they reach you, they can inflict quite a bit of damage.
Pierre
(Level 5 - St. Francis' Folly)
You meet this bloke first in this level, but you won't be able to kill him until level 9
(Tomb of Tihocan), so don't waste valuable ammo on him before. As with Larson, he tends to shoot at you, then run about a bit before
attacking again, but he's armed with Magnums, so try to keep out of his way. Keep moving,
and after several shots with the pistols, he will run away. In level 9, where you can kill
him, just keep moving and shooting, you'll bring him down eventually.
Crocodiles
(Level 5 - St. Francis' Folly)
These creatures and are mainly found in water, but sometimes on land. If there are in
water, swim past them quickly and get out of the water as soon as you can to shoot at them
from dry land. They cannot make the transition from land to water or water to land, which
helps a lot. On land, they are quick, so blast them with the Shotgun, or
find a ledge and shoot at them from there.
Cougars
(Level 5 - St. Francis' Folly)
These creatures first appear at the lend of this level, and are very similar to the Lions, but are quicker, and are slightly easier to kill. As with
lions, use rapid fire weapons, as they attack in packs usually. Back flip out of the way
whilst shooting
Giant
Rats (Level 8 - Cistern)
These creatures can be heard squeaking before they attack. Relatively simple to kill with
just a few shots of the Pistols, but sometimes attack in groups and will bite Lara's slender
ankles if they get the chance. Also watch out for rats in the water, and take them out
before entering if possible. As with crocs, they
cannot get from water to land and land to water, so use this to your advantage.
Centaurs
(Level 9 - Tomb of Tihocan)
The first one you come across will probably take you by surprise at the end of this level,
as they begin life as statues, coming to life as Lara nears. These creatures take a lot of
rapid fire to bring down, and if that wasn't enough, they fire fireballs at you fairly
rapidly, which will do some serious damage. The best defence against these is to keep away
from them and use your best rapid fire weapon, whilst at the same time jumping sideways.
You'll know when they are dead because they tend to explode. Their main weakness is their
size, which means that they cannot get through most doorways.
Panthers
(Level 10 - City of Khamoon)
These jet black cats are bigger, faster and a lot harder to kill than Lions. They are also quiet creatures until they attack, so keep an
eye out for them as they tend to lurk in the shadows. Rapid fire weapons work best, and
backflipping whilst shooting is really the only defence, as they can jump up blocks and
through narrow gaps
Mummified
Panthers (Level 10 - City of Khamoon)
These creatures are much worse than the normal run-of-the-mill Panthers you met earlier. They are quicker, more agile, and no matter
what weapon you shoot with, they will take a lot of hits to kill, although rapid fire
weapons are best. If that isn't enough, they can also jump up small blocks and stairs, and
explode when they die. The best way to kill these is to get to a save ledge if possible
and shoot from there. Try to ensure you are not close to them when they explode, as this
may do some damage.
Demon
Panthers (Level 12 - Sanctuary of Scion)
Very similar to Mummified Panthers in their attack, except for the fact that they are red
(ish) and throw fireballs at you. Use the same techniques as for the Centaurs: keep your distance and use rapid fire weapons, jumping from
side to side.
Winged
Demons (Level 12 - Sanctuary of Scion)
Winged Demons first appear in this level, and are quite abundant in later levels. Their
basic mode of attack is similar to the bats, in that they will try to knock you to the
ground and claw you to death. They are, however, relatively easy to kill with any rapid
fire weapon. As with all demonic creatures, they will explode when killed, so keep your
distance.
The
Cowboy (Level 13 - Natla's Mines)
This henchman of Natla's only appears in this level, and you will need to have retrieved
your weapons from the hanging hut to kill him. If you haven't got your guns back by now,
then go back and find the three fuses to get them. The cowboy uses your Magnums to shoot
at you, and it will take quite a few shots with your Pistols to kill him.
The best chance you have is when he is making idle threats at you when he first appears,
as he won't start shooting until after he's finished. Watch out for lava pits in the room
you find him as well.
Skateboarding
Kid (Level 13 - Natla's Mines)
This is another one of Natla's henchmen, and again only appears in this level. He is very
fast on his board, and shoots at you with your Uzis. This kid will follow you around until
you jump up a ledge, but as there are no ledges in this room, then you will need to keep
moving and shooting, preferably with your Magnums if you have
them.
Shotgun
Sam (Level 13 - Natla's Mines)
Near the end of this level you'll come across the last of her henchmen, who is armed with
your shotgun. As the shotgun is a close range weapon, keep your distance from him and keep
moving while your shooting at him with your Magnums or Uzis. He'll die eventually
Hatching
Demons (Level 14 - Atlantis)
These evil creatures burst from huge eggs which explode as you approach, if they are
active. You can tell if they are active by looking if the two 'arms' at either side of the
eggs are moving. If they are then watch out, if not then you can pass without it hatching.
The demons which come out are either Mummified Panthers or are big and mean monsters which shoot fire balls at you. Lots of
jumping and rapid fire will down these suckers. But watch out, they explode when killed,
so keep away !!
Creature
of Flesh (Lara Shaped) (Level 14 - Atlantis)
This creature will appear only once in the game, and cannot be shot (try it and you'll get
a nasty surprise). There is only one way to kill this creature, so watch exactly what it
does, and try to lure it into a pit of lava. You'll have to figure out how to do this by
yourself, or read the Walk-through for this level.
Mother
From Hell (Level 15 - The Great Pyramid)
This huge creature is the mother of all of Natla's demonic creatures to come, and appears
at the very beginning of the last level, on a ledge with Lara. There is no escape from
this creature, and it will take a vast amount of hits to kill. The creature is slow
though, so keep moving, and avoid those huge claws at all costs. Watch where you are
running as well, because there is a very large drop over the edge. There are many
different techniques to shooting it while at the same time keeping out of the way, but the
main technique it to keep moving.
Natla
(Level 15 - The Great Pyramid)
Natla, the nice woman who first gave you the job of finding the Scion in the initial FMV
now shows her true form by turning into a winged demon. She is the last enemy you will
come across, and possibly the worst. If the fact that she fire fireballs at you isn't bad
enough, she can dodge and weave like a good boxer as well, making shooting her quite
difficult. Shoot her with you most powerful rapid fire weapons until she falls to the
ground, then run, because there's a thing about being one of the undead.....
Here we have the hazards which will hamper your
progress through the level. Most of these just need timing to get past, but nearly all of
them do some serious damage if caught up in them. As with the Enemies, I have tried to let
you know the best way of getting past them, as well as the first level you'll come across
them
Poison
Darts (Level 1 - The Caves)
These shoot at you from the walls, and do some damage. Luckily, they always fire at a
steady rate, so you should be able to anticipate when they will shoot. The best way is to
walk slowly up to them then run forward a pace when the dart has shot passed.
Swinging
Blades (Level 2 - City of Vilcabama)
These very sharp head slicers are to be avoided at all costs. One full-on chop and you can
begin to load a saved game. Keep an eye on their swing, and run past when it is clear. You
may find it better to start your run when the blade is in front of you
Rolling
Boulders (Level 4 - Tomb of Qualopec)
Big heavy boulders. Don't get caught or you will get squashed and die. Just run out of the
way of these, or if possible, hang on a ledge and let the boulder roll over you with no
damage.
Deadly
Spikes (Level 4 - Tomb of Qualopec)
Ouch!! Sharp and probably poisoned , these are not to be dropped in on (especially as most
of them tend to be below collapsing floors). However, you can WALK through them without
any damage.
Plasma
Bolts (Level 5 - St. Francis' Folly)
Found in through Thor's door, these bolts will fry you if they hit, so try and keep out of
the way by running and jumping. They land in a circle created by grey tiles on the floor,
so keep out of the circle
Thor's
Hammer (Level 5 - St. Francis' Folly)
This huge slab of Lara-killing metal will drop down on you when you set it off. Jump out
of the way or Lara pancake will be on the menu
Dropping
Swords (Level 5 - St. Francis' Folly)
These again are set off when you perform a certain action. Watch out for the shadows on
the floor to see where they are above you. Walking towards them will give you the chance
to stop when you hear one falling.
Burners
(Level 7 - Palace Midas)
Flaming burners are very bad for your health if you get caught by one. If you do, find
some water nearby to douse them. The first time you meet them, they will go out as you
approach, but come back on after a certain time. You will need to get across them with
precision jumping whilst they are out. It looks relatively easy, but it will take several
attempts.
Clashing
Spiked Doors (Level 7 - Palace Midas)
These deadly doors will chop you in half if you get caught between them. They are very
easy to hear, as they make more racket than anything else. The trick to getting through
them safely is to walk up to them, then start your run through then when they are closed.
By the time you are running, they will have opened, and you can pass safely through.
Hot and
Steamy Lava (Level 13 - Natla's Mines)
Surprisingly enough, this stuff will snub out Lara's life as soon as she touches it, so
keep away. There are a few pits about with this stuff below, so make sure you keep an eye
out for them.
